Just for information, the Ryanair flight from Beziers, France (BZR) to Bristol, UK (BRS)
Sat, 18 September 2010, Flight FR6025 (Depart BZR at 20:25) might have been a victim of bird strike.

During takeoff, the starboard engine of this Boeing 737 started vibrating badly and the plane was unable to climb properly.
We turned round and glided slowly down to Girona airport in Spain where we were moved to another plane and flown home.

Initial announcements suggested possible bird strike, but sitting over the wing, I have a suspicion that the engine vibration might have started before taxi-ing for takeoff.

Full of praise for Ryanair’s handling of the situation. Pilot was efficient and landed well at Girona; replacement plane provided with minimum of fuss and all delivered safely to Bristol about 4 hours late.

A Delta Airlines plane getting ready to take off from JFK this evening struck several birds, forcing the pilot to hit the brakes, flattening two tires in the process.

The Boeing 767 did not suffer any other damage and nobody was hurt, aviation officials said.

There were 202 passengers and 11 crew members on-board Delta flight 72, which was en route to Istanbul, company officials said.

Authorities aren’t sure where the birds struck the plane, but the impact caused the pilot to abort his 5:45 p.m. takeoff and hit the brakes. The heat and force of the immediate stop made so-called blow-out plugs in the plane’s tires to activate, causing the wheels to decompress in order to avoid a blowout, officials explained.

“The captain aborted the takeoff as a precautionary measure,” Delta Airlines spokeswoman Susan Elliott said. “It was a bird strike.”

The plane was able to taxi back to the gate under its own power. Passengers were off-loaded and are trying to get on new flights to Europe, Delta officials said.

–>US Airways Flight 1549 ditched into the Hudson River in January after it struck a flock of Canada geese. All 155 people aboard survived.

The risk of commercial airplanes crashing after striking large birds is increasing, so design standards should be strengthened so that aircraft can withstand the collisions, federal safety officials said Tuesday.

The National Transportation Safety Board voted to recommend that the Federal Aviation Administration revise its standards, which require that airframes be able to withstand a collision with a 4-pound bird and that airplane tails be able to withstand an 8-pound bird. The recommendation didn’t include engines.

The standards were established in the 1970s, but populations of most large-bird species in North America have been increasing because of environmental protections. Many species of the greatest concern have average weights that are double or triple the standards.

Air traffic has also increased dramatically, with annual takeoffs and landings in the United States forecast to surpass 1 billion by 2020. That means more planes and more large birds sharing the skies.

The board made its recommendation after determining that a collision with a flock of white pelicans, which can weigh up to 30 pounds, caused a business jet to crash in Oklahoma last year, killing five men. Investigators said the collision severely damaged a wing of the Cessna Citation 500 and knocked out the power in one engine. They said the plane could have continued to fly using its other engine, but not with the wing damage.

The danger of bird-aircraft collisions has received extensive scrutiny since US Airways Flight 1549 ditched into the Hudson River in January after it struck a flock of Canada geese after takeoff from LaGuardia Airport in New York. All 155 people aboard survived.

In both cases the collisions took place shortly after takeoff roughly four miles from the airport at an altitude of about 3,000 feet. Both planes struck flocks of large migratory birds.

A panel that included the FAA, safety agencies from other countries and the aviation industry spent 10 years studying whether airframes need to be strengthened to withstand larger birds, but it disbanded without taking action.

FAA spokeswoman Diane Spitaliere said the agency will consider the board’s recommendation and act if warranted. She said one reason standards haven’t been changed is a concern that it will increase planes’ weight.

The board also reiterated a recommendation it made in 1999 that airports and airlines be required to report bird strikes to a database maintained by the FAA and the Agriculture Department.

CORPUS CHRISTI — A malfunction in the design of the throttle and a bird strike caused two training aircraft from Naval Air Station Kingsville to crash in separate incidents in 2005. The causes of those incidents were released to the Caller-Times last week.

The T-45A Goshawk that crashed on May 11, 2005, on land owned by the base was the result of an engine shutdown related to the throttle design, according to a naval investigation report released on July 16. The design might prevent the idle stop from engaging after the landing gear handle is placed in the down position.

A pilot was injured in that incident. Navy investigators recommended redesigning the throttle. Attempts on Tuesday to reach the Chief of Naval Air Training were not successful.

The $20 million aircraft was considered a loss and the Navy did not replace it because it had a program to periodically replace the Goshawks due to wear and tear.

The Navy also didn’t replace the $20 million aircraft heavily damaged after a crash five months later.

A second T-45A Goshawk crashed on Oct. 31, 2005, while conducting touch-and-go’s, flight procedures necessary to land and take off from aircraft carriers.

The crash occurred on King Ranch property and was found to be a bird strike.

An investigation report stated the pilots saw the bird go into the intake before the aircraft began to malfunction. An examination of the aircraft after the incident showed severe damage to the compressor blades caused by the intake of birds.

The pilots in both incidents, when medically cleared, were to resume their flight status, according to the reports. The aircraft and pilots were assigned to Training Wing Two at the Kingsville base.

An American Airlines jet was forced to make an emergency landing Wednesday shortly after taking off in Missouri after one of its engines was disabled by a collision with a bird.

The American Airlines MD-80 jet landed at Lambert Airport in St. Louis shortly after takeoff around 2 p.m.

A passenger on board the flight to Los Angeles said that he saw a bird “go into the engine,” as the plane climbed.

The airline confirmed that the plane’s right engine was disabled by the bird strike. According to American Airlines officials, the pilot immediately declared an emergency and returned to the airport.

None of the 140 people on board were injured.

Why the Sudden Rise in Flying Accidents?

July 29, 2009

It seems that every few weeks there is news about another collision between birds and planes. So what’s happening in the skies? Are birds organizing and forming terrorist flocks with the purpose of attacking a plane? Certainly “bird strike” is an evocative term.

Can Planes and Birds Coexist?

So why all the air strikes? The reason the accidents are occurring more frequently isn’t because of the boom in bird populations as some suggest, the problem is that there are more planes than ever before. More trips by air means more potential problems with sharing the sky with our feathered friends.

According to some reports, increasing bird populations are to blame for the collisions. Newspapers and blogs have been reporting in bird strike stories that since1967 and the creation of the Environmental Protection Act (EPA), bird species are increasing. Yet, it’s very difficult to find any evidence to substantiate this claim.

Birds Declining, Planes Increasing

The Audubon Society suggests the very opposite, reporting that populations of commonly seen birds has decreased by 68% with some individual species declining over 80% since 1967.

The North American Bird Conservation Initiative (NABCI), a Canadian, American and Mexican initiative, also reports that bird species are in decline. In Canada it is estimated that there are more than 600 species of birds, and of these, 42 are listed as endangered or threatened. Along with the Audubon Society’s report, bird groups across North America are showing serious and long-term declines.

Of course, everyone wants to fly in safety (birds must feel the same way). So what are the odds? The news is both good and bad. Plane and bird collisions are not rare; according to Transport Canada’s most recent report from 2008, there were 1,230 reported bird strikes to Canadian planes. The good news? Only 3 resulted in a forced landing and 4 resulted in engine shutdown. No crashes were reported.

If you look at these rates and compare them to the bird stats reported by NABCI and Audubon, odds are you’ll be perfectly safe flying in an airplane.

The collision with one or more of birds, which tend to weigh on average about 20lb according to the Smithsonian’s Natural Museum of History, took out the right engine but more crucially, damaged the aircraft’s wings to the point that it was uncontrollable.

The resulting spiral, simulated by the NTSB below, sent the two pilots and three passengers to their deaths.

After some rehashing of radar data, investigators determined which clutter was most likely the flock of pelicans in the vicinity at the time. Blue dots indicate pelicans while the aircraft’s track after it departed the Wiley Post Airport in Oklahoma is in yellow.

Here’s the ultimate result of the collision…

First, an image from a surveillance video camera in the vicinity.

Then the final outcome…

What can be done?

The NTSB made 10 new recommendations, some dealing with how the aircraft was operated, but others focused on mitigating the increasing frequency with which birds and aircraft are meeting.

The simplest strategy, other than see-and-avoid, is to give pilots an understanding of the bird strike energy for which their aircraft are certified. Under Part 25 certification rules, a Cessna Citation 500 must be able to sustain a hit to the wing of a 4lb bird at cruise speed and be able to continue flying. and perform a safe landing.

The image below shows the damage caused by a 4lb bird at a cruise speed of 287kt…

The empennage must be able to handle an 8lb bird at cruise speeds.

The trick is to figure out how fast the airplane can then hit a 20lb pelican, assuming the pilot obtains information that such birds are in the area.

Based in the laws of physics (kinetic energy = 1/2 * mass * velocity-squared), the equivalent energy of the 4lb at 287kt is 14,586 ft-lb, according to the NTSB.

To stay below that energy, the aircraft would have to be traveling at 128kt or slower when it hits a 20lb pelican, according to my calculations. It’s a large decrease in speed, but one that might be worth considering an aircraft’s brief duration at such low altitudes, given the consequences..

What’s the old saying – “An ounce of prevention is worth a lb of cure”?
