Jet lands safely at LaGuardia after reported bird strike

An American Airlines Boeing 737 jetliner landed safely at LaGuardia Airport late Tuesday morning after the crew reported a bird strike on final approach, a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman told Newsday.

Flight 1256, en route from Miami to LaGuardia, was at 900 feet when it struck what was reported as a bird, FAA spokesman Jim Peters said.

“The plane landed without incident, under power,” Peters said. He said there were no reported injuries in the incident.

An FAA investigator is on the scene, Peters said.

The incident occurred at 10:54 a.m., Peters said, as the 737 was on final approach to Runway 22 at LaGuardia.

Peters said that unlike US Airways Flight 1549, the bird or birds that struck Flight 1256 Tuesday apparently were not ingested by the engines. Flight 1549 lost power in both engines following multiple bird strikes that forced Capt. Chesley Sullenberger to ditch in the Hudson River on Jan. 15.

Flight 1256 departed Miami at 8:14 a.m., according to American Airlines. It was not immediately clear how many passengers and crew were aboard.

After the jetliner landed safely at LaGuardia the captain notified the tower the plane may have damaged its landing gear and was taken, under tug, to its gate – arriving at 11:11 a.m.

No damage to the gear was found, however, a source said.

Peters said more details may be coming later in the day.
