Pilots have tended to provide most of the information collected on bird strikes, which are a serious problem that can affect air travel safety and involve repairs to aircraft. A study in Hawaii has found that there were 526 bird strikes, with 25% of these reported by pilots. Pilots were more likely to report some species of birds, including short-eared owls and spotted doves. Pilots did not necessarily report larger birds more often. Airports may be using inadequate data if they rely solely on pilot reports for data for controlling this problem.
